There are a number of events to report on this week. Some are live events, and we encourage everyone to take the utmost in measures to protect yourself and others as we all try best to meet the ongoing challenges. Stay safe!
Events that have been postponed due to Covid conditions include the Borrego Springs Film Festival which is now slated to begin on March 24th. The Center for World Music's Music and Dance of Bali Concert has been rescheduled to May 20th, and the Korean Music and Dance concert has been shifted to July 8th. The Mariela Contreras concert at the Museum of Making Music has also been postponed; she will now perform at the Museum on June 16th & 17th. We are unsure of the status of the screening of the film Hotel Salvation at the Coronado Library. It is no longer listed on the library's event page, and the direct link to the event is broken. Please double-check other live events before you make plans to see if they have been postponed or canceled. Also, please check safety protocols for any live even that you wish to attend.
The Beyond Van Gogh exhibition opens today (Friday) at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Tomorrow (Saturday) The Culinary Historians of San Diego will present Indigenous Foods and Native Subsistence: Living off the Sustainable Landscape at the Central Library. The Chinese Historical Society continues their 2nd Saturday series of virtual talks with Dr. Hilda van Neck-Yoder speaking about this history of Chinese Porcelain in the Netherlands. At the Mission Valley Public Library there will be a workshop on using Google Earth to Survey World Architecture to learn about sustainable home design.
Sunday the Electric Ûd Trio featuring Farhad Bahrami, Angelica Pruitt and Koosha Hakimi will perform at the Persian Cultural Center. The San Diego Shakespeare Society will present a virtual reading of Macbeth where attendees are encouraged to join in.
Monday, the Worldbeat Center will host its 33rd Annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration with music, dance, food and a marketplace.
Next Wednesday there will be talk entitled A Child in Birkenau presented by holocaust survivor George Hadl. It was originally scheduled as a live event, but it now will take place virtually.
Next Thursday the San Diego Italian Film Festival will offer a virtual screening of the film Cosa Sarà (Everything’s Gonna Be Alright).
On Monday, the 24th and Tuesday the 25th the North Coast Rep Theatre in Solana Beach will present The Soap Myth a benefit play reading starring Richard Dreyfuss.
Also on January 25th Warwick's present a virtual talk with Roderick Beaton as he discusses his new book, The Greeks: A Global History. At St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, the San Diego Early Music will present Profeti della Quinta with music by Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Luzzaschi, Cipriano de Rore and Kapsberger.
On Thursday, January 27th the San Diego Italian Film Festival will offer a virtual screening of the comedy Come un Gatto in Tangenziale (Like a Cat on a Highway).
Friday, January 28 at Henwood Memorial Park the Little Saigon Foundation host a 3-day Lunar New Year Festival. Also starting on the 28th and continuing throughout the weekend, the lovely folks at the Media Arts Center will present films from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival including: La Guerra Civil, Alice on Friday, Every Day in Kaimukī, Sirens, and Emergency on Saturday and Marte Um (Mars One) and Free Chol Soo Lee on Sunday. Warwick's, along with a network of other book stores, will present an Author Virtual Talk with Isabel Allende who will discuss her new book, Violeta.
Saturday, January 29 the San Diego Korean American Folk Dance Association will perform at the Central Library.
